In 2006, I got the opportunity to intern at a Canadian NGO in Sri Lanka. While i was there, I visited a youth development program in the southern part of the country. It’s this program - Youth in Transition Program (YITP) - and its young participants who had inspired me to learn more about the contemporary youth issues, in Sri Lanka as well as anywhere in the world. The blog is primarily dedicated to the young people of YITP in Sri Lanka, as well as everyone who’s interested in or has been working with young people. As I continue to work on my undergrad thesis on YITP, more postings related to my research findings will be up for comments, reference and feedback. I’m hoping that one day, my friends in Sri Lanka can come to my blog and post their comments.”Hand in Hand in Transition” would therefore help me explore the wonder and complexities of young people nowadays, including myself since I’m also young muahaha. Ultimately, it hopes to gather information about different types of youth programs in the world and present their differences and similarities. Given that I’m doing research work in different locations - China, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Canada, cyberspace…I hope that where ever i go, I can share what I have learned with my friends and colleagues through this blog.
I like the word “transition”. It’s a word that can be interpreted in so many different ways which involves the changing notions of time and space. Life is full of transition, and we are, I am. Feel free to share your thoughts on any language you feel comfortable with. Tamil seyalam, Sinhala puluwan, 中文也可以,bahasa tulislah!
Notes:
I have organized my blog in a way where cross cultural learning can happen in the areas of youth and youth programs, non-formal education, education theories, program monitoring and evaluation etc etc. I often post excerpt from articles which have inspired me or stimulated my critical thinking in some ways. You can find where I’m up to at the “thesis journey” section.
A bit about myself:
I am a Malaysia-born Chinese, now studying in Canada for my undergrad degree in International Development Studies and Anthropology. I love learning…currently my biggest goal is to finish my final year thesis promptly and nicely
When situations allow, i go travel travel, partly to search for those friends whom i met during my life time, but also to explore and wander. I am a busy body and i am concerned about lots of things in the world…whenever i have the time, i help the research team of www.ruralchina.org and http://blog.ruralchina.org/. The picture below was taken during one of the evening activities at YITP. I was trying to chase away those annoying mosquitoes that bit my friends when they were trying so hard to walk across the “land - mine”.
